Is India moving to become a Hindua Rashtra ?

This is an important piece in learning the future outlook of India as a country and it’s impact on it’s neighbors as a nation.

In the early 8th century, a young Muslim warlord, Mohammed bin Qasim, captured Sindh after heavy fighting. Although this area was very small, but the consequences of this defeat proved to be very far-reaching. According to historians, this proved to be the most important turning point in the history of the Indian subcontinent.

After this war, Islamic culture came into contact with Indian civilization, and Islam spread throughout the subcontinent, although the first Muslims to set foot on Indian soil were merchants who came to Kerala to worship India’s first mosque, this That was the period when Hazrat Muhammad was alive.

17-year-old Mohammed bin Qasim would not have guessed that his victory would prove to be a shock to the centuries-old political and cultural system. Since then, India has traveled an interesting journey passing through many lanes of history. In the twentieth century, it adopted a constitution that gives it the appearance of a secular nation. Is that on the verge of changing in the 21st century?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first address inside Parliament after a landslide victory in 2014, expressed grief over centuries of slavery. Elaborating on history, he said that:

The slavery mentality of 1200 years is bothering us.

Although historians have always described the 200 years of British rule as the period of slavery.

But the people of the right-wing ideology agree with the opinion of Prime Minister Modi, according to which India was enslaved for centuries and in it almost a thousand years of slavery remained under Muslim rulers. From this it was concluded that before the arrival of Muslim rulers, India was a Hindu nation free from foreign influences.

Although Buddhists also ruled in ancient India, they were not foreigners. Hindutva thinkers Savarkar and Golwalkar believed that the idea of a Hindu Rashtra has been there since ancient times.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue and BJP MP in Rajya Sabha Professor Rakesh Sinha says, “Hindu Rashtra has been the specialty of India since the beginning of Indian civilization and culture and it is the heritage, present and future of India.”

However, Professor Wendy Doniger, an American scholar specializing in Hinduism, rejects the concept of a Hindu nation in ancient India. There was a lot of controversy about his book ‘The Hindus, An Alternative History’ after which the publisher decided not to sell the book in India.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Doniger said:

“India was never a Hindu nation. Even in the Vedic period , in a small part of India , worship was performed according to Vedic rituals . Different forms of worship existed among Hindus and this was the reason why many analysts consider Hinduism as one religion . _ _ _Did n’t see . _ _ When other religions and cultures entered India , the different ideologies of Hindus did not weaken but became stronger , so this whole argument is absurd . _ _ _ _ _
But Shonalika Kaul, the historian of ancient India, believes that Hindu Rashtra existed in ancient times.

In such a situation, the question is how did the idea of Hindu Rashtra come in the original form, on which there is so much discussion now. Are there any signs of India turning into a Hindu Rashtra? How is history and educational material being rewritten to promote the idea of a Hindu Rashtra? What will be the place for minorities in this Hindu Rashtra? Will this require a constitutional amendment or will it become an election issue in the 2024 general election? An attempt is made to find answers to these questions in this report.
